Capital City
Cruisers This month's Member of the Month is
CCC President, Rex Roden. Rex is employed at Brasher's Sacramento Auto
Auction as General Manager and has been working there for 25 years. Rex
is looking forward to retiring in April 2010.
The year was 1965 and things were heating up in Vietnam and Rex joined the U.S. Navy. While on his first cruise, Rex's dad sold the Chevy...bummer. Rex didn't own a car until he got back home on liberty in 1967 and bought 1966 Chevelle. "The car was great" replied Rex. "It had a 327 motor with a 4 barrel carb and 3 on the tree, it was a real babe magnet". Rex discharged out the Navy in 1969 and immediately went over to Lew Williams Chevrolet traded in the 66 Chevelle and bought a 1970 Chevelle SS. Rex soon sold the Chevelle when the insurance got to be too much and bought 1968 Buick Riviera, "the Buick was cool, a real land yahct. A few years went by and in 1971 Rex met his future wife Sue. They dated and married in 1974. Rex and Sue started working on a family and shorly thereafter had their first daughter Mandy and soon after their second daughter Lindsay. It wasn't until the year 2000 that Rex got back into cars and bought a 1939 Ford Pick-Up. In 2004 Rex found a great deal on 1940 Ford Pick-Up and bought it. In 2005 Rex traded the 39 Ford for a 1962 Impala SS, a great cruiser with a TPI motor and 700R4 tranny. In 2005 Rex bought a 1937 Ford Cabriolet at Silver's Auction in Reno at Hot August Nights. Along the way Rex purchased a 1957 Chevy Bel Air and a 1936 Ford 3-Window Coupe. Currently Rex still owns the 1940 Ford Pick-Up, the Impala SS, the 1937 Ford Cabriolet, and the 1936 Ford 3-Window Coupe and is not looking to buy any more cars if he wants to stay married. It was 2004 when Rex and longtime high school buddy, Gary Hunter, along with friends Jim Frasinetti and John Steuber got together an re-formed the Capital City Cruisers Car Club. "We've been very lucky", replied Rex, "we've got a great bunch of folks in our club". The Capital City Cruisers conduct 4 major shows each year and several Thursday evening cruise-ins at the Red Robin Restaurant in Citrus Heights. Over the last 4 years the Capital City Cruisers have donated over $10,000.00 in cash and toys to their favorite charity, Gifts From The Heart, a local organization that helps kids and seniors. "That's what it is all about" replied Rex, "cruising and showing the old cars, having some fun along the way, and being able to help some folks who are less fortunate". "It just doesn't get any better than that" Good Luck Rex...
